Why Tesla Owners Pick the Wall Connector
For most Tesla owners, the Wall Connector is the simplest home charger to live with. It uses the same plug as your car, talks to the Tesla app, and charges at up to 48 amps on the right circuit.
It's rated for indoor and outdoor use, so it works in a garage or on the side of the house by the driveway. The cable is long enough to reach most charge ports without stretching across the floor.
What Our Wall Connector Install Includes
A Wall Connector install is a new dedicated circuit plus a few Tesla specific setup steps.
- Check your panel for space and spare capacity, with a load calculation if it's close.
- Add a double pole breaker sized for the charging speed you want.
- Run copper wire from the panel to the Wall Connector, in conduit wherever it's exposed.
- Mount the unit near where your charge port sits when you park.
- Set the Wall Connector's maximum current to match the breaker during setup.
- Connect it to your Wi-Fi so it can get updates, then test it with your car.
- Pull the permit and meet the county inspector.
Breaker Size and Charging Speed
The Wall Connector charges at up to 80% of the breaker it's on, because EV charging counts as a continuous load. A 60 amp breaker gets you the full 48 amps.
| Breaker | Wall Connector setting |
|---|---|
| 60 amps | 48 amps |
| 50 amps | 40 amps |
| 40 amps | 32 amps |
| 30 amps | 24 amps |
You don't always need the biggest setting. Some Tesla models can't take the full 48 amps at home, and a 40 or 32 amp setup still covers most daily driving overnight.
If your panel is tight, a smaller breaker can save you from a panel upgrade. We'll tell you which setting makes sense for your car and your panel.

Power sharing lets two or more Wall Connectors split one circuit. Each unit talks to the others over Wi-Fi and divides the power between the cars that are plugged in.
When only one car is charging, it gets the full amount. When both are plugged in, they share it.
This is often the cheapest way to charge two Teslas at home, because it saves you from adding a second large circuit. In many homes, it also avoids a panel upgrade.
Wall Connector or Mobile Connector?
The Mobile Connector is the portable cord Tesla sells. With its NEMA 14-50 adapter, it plugs into a 240 volt outlet and charges slower than a Wall Connector.
If you rent, plan to move soon, or want one cord for home and travel, a NEMA 14-50 outlet with the Mobile Connector is a fair choice.
For a home you own, we usually suggest the Wall Connector. It charges faster and there's no outlet to wear out.
Have a Tesla and Another EV?
Tesla also sells a Universal Wall Connector with a built in adapter for cars that use the J1772 plug. It's a good pick for a household with a Tesla and a different brand of EV.
Many newer EVs from other brands are switching to the Tesla style plug (called NACS), so a standard Wall Connector may work for your next car too. Check your car's plug before you buy.
What a Wall Connector Install Costs
ContractorPlus estimates $1,464 to $2,928 for an EV charger install in Charlotte. The biggest things that move the price are the distance from your panel to the charger and whether the panel has room.
A Wall Connector on the other side of the garage wall from your panel is about as simple as it gets. A long run to a detached garage or the end of a driveway costs more.
If Duke Energy is your power company, its Charger Prep Credit can help pay for the wiring and panel side of the job. We check what applies to your home when we quote.
