Detached Garage EV Charger Wiring in Charlotte, NC

A detached garage needs real power run out to it, usually underground from the house. Charlotte EV Charger Installation Pros handles the trench, the wire and the charger.

When it makes sense, we also add a small subpanel so the garage has room for more than just the car.

Why Detached Garages Take More Work

Most detached garages either have no power or a single small circuit for lights and an opener. That isn't enough for a Level 2 charger, which needs its own 240 volt circuit.

So the job has two parts: getting a bigger feed from the house to the garage, and then installing the charger. The distance between the two buildings drives most of the cost.

How the Wire Gets There

Wire to a detached garage almost always runs underground. Here's what that involves:

  • Calling NC 811 so buried gas, water and cable lines get marked before any digging.
  • Digging a trench from the house to the garage, deep enough to meet the electrical code for the type of conduit used.
  • Boring under a driveway or sidewalk instead of cutting through it, when the path crosses one.
  • Running wire sized for the distance. Long runs lose voltage, so they often need a heavier wire than a short garage install.

Once the wire is in, we backfill the trench and tidy the yard as best we can. Expect some fresh dirt and grass seed for a few weeks.

Charger Circuit or Subpanel?

You have two choices for the garage. A single circuit just for the charger is the simpler, cheaper option.

A subpanel costs more up front, but it gives the garage its own breakers. That's the better pick if you want a workshop, more outlets, a second charger or a mini split later.

A subpanel in a separate building also needs its own grounding at that building. We size the feed so your main panel can still carry everything in the house.

Check Your Main Panel First

A long feed to a garage only works if your main panel has room for it. Older Charlotte homes with 100 amp service may need a load management device or an upgrade first.

What It Costs

ContractorPlus estimates $1,464 to $2,928 for a typical EV charger install in Charlotte. Detached garages usually cost more than that, because of the trench and the longer, heavier wire.

These are estimates. Your distance, soil and what's in the path can move the price up or down, so we give you a firm number before any work starts.
